The Great Canadian Kayak Challenge and Festival  paddling  competitions will get under way at 9:00 am. All registered paddlers are asked to sign in at the registration tent one hour prior to their departure time. Please review activity schedule posted under Festival Events for all departure times. The Marcel Pelchat  Elite Challenge- 32kms (No restrictions on Length)

Departure time: 9:00 am

Open to all age groups
Entry Fee: $110
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $1,500 (depending on number of registrations) for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 3-4 hours.
Boat restrictions: Any length of  kayak.   Kayaks must have internal storage compartments (bulkheads), storage deck rigging or storage compartments to carry all the gear required for the race. NO SURF SKIS Or modifications to any purchased boat.
At approximately 32 km in length, the Elite Challenge is the most physically demanding course in the Great Canadian Kayak Challenge. This challenge requires participants to paddle both the Mattagami and Mountjoy Rivers and incorporates two 100 metre portage. Kayak carts may be used but will not be supplied. Carts will be available for purchase.

The Elite Recreational Challenge- 16kms

Departure time: 9:30 am

Open to all ages
Entry fee: $75.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $750.00 (depending on number of registrations) for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 2 hours or less
Boat restrictions:  10.65:1 ratio, any construction
The Elite Recreational Challenge will take place on the Mattagami River. This course is 16 km in length with no portages.

The Recreational Challenge- 16kms

Departure time: 10:00 am
Open to all age groups
Entry fee: $60.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $400.00 (depending on number of registrations) for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 2 – 3 hours.
Boat restrictions: 14’4″ and under, any construction
The Recreational Challenge will take place on the Mattagami River. This course is 16 km in length with no portages.

The Plastic Kayak Challenge – 10km

Departure time: 11:15 am
Open to all age groups
Entry fee: $40.00
Estimated duration: 1.5 hours- 2
Boat restrictions: any length of  plastic kayak Kayaks must have internal storage compartments (bulkheads), storage deck rigging or storage compartments to carry all the gear required for the race.
At 10km in length, the Plastic Kayak Challenge takes place on the Mattagami River only.

The Open Long Boat Challenge-6.5kms

Departure time: 3:45 pm
Open to all age groups
Entry fee: $30.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $350.00 for both male and female categories
Estimated duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Boat restrictions: 10.65:1 ratio, any construction
At 6.5 km in length, the Open Long Boat Challenge, takes place on the Mattagami River only. There will be no portages in this division. You may enter the Open Challenge even if you have participated in other divisions.

The Open Little Boat Challenge-6.5kms

Departure time: 1:45 pm
Open to all age groups
Entry fee: $30.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $350.00 for both male and female categories
Estimated duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Boat restrictions: 14′ 4” and under, any construction

At 6.5 km in length, the Little Open Challenge takes place on the Mattagami River only. There will be no portages in this division. You may enter the Open Challenge even if you have participated in other divisions. Open to all age groups, 45 minutes to an hour estimated duration.

The Novice Challenge-5kms

Departure time: 3:00 pm

Open to all age groups with less than 2 years of kayak paddling experience
Entry fee: $30.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $250.00 for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 1 – 2 hours.
Boat restrictions: 14’4″ and under, any construction
At 5.0 km in length, the Novice Challenge, which takes place on the Mattagami River only, is perfect for those who kayak casually or are new to the sport. There will be no portages in this division.

The Dr. John Shaw Seniors (Masters) Rec  Challenge-6.5km

Departure time: 1:15 p m
Age 55 +
Entry fee: $30.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $250.00 for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 1 – 1.5 hours.
Boat restrictions: 14’4″ and under, any construction   Kayaks must have internal storage compartments (bulkheads), storage deck rigging or storage compartments to carry all the gear required for the race.
Paddling the Mattagami River only, this challenge is 6.5 km in length with no portages.

The Dr. John Shaw Seniors (Masters) Elite Challenge-6.5km

Departure time: 12:30 p m
Age 55 +
Entry fee: $30.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $250.00 for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 1 – 1.5 hours.
Boat restrictions: 10.65:1 ratio, any construction  Kayaks must have internal storage compartments (bulkheads), storage deck rigging or storage compartments to carry all the gear required for the race. NO SURF SKIS Or modifications to any purchased boat.
Paddling the Mattagami River only, this challenge is 6.5 km in length with no portages.

Youth Challenge-3kms

Departure time: 2:30 pm
Ages 14 and under.
Entry fee: $20.00
Top prize: 1st place cash prize of up to $100.00 for both male and female categories.
Estimated duration: 1-2 hours.
Boat restrictions: 14’4″ and under, any construction
Paddling the Mattagami River only, this challenge is 3.0 km in length with no portages.

The Jack Watson Celebrity Challenge-3kms

Departure time: 12:00 pm

Open to invited participants.
By invitation only, no entry fee
Top Prize – City Trophy and 1 Year’s worth of bragging rights
Must supply own kayak and safety equipment
Estimated duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Boat Restriction: 14’4″ and under
Paddling the Mattagami River only, this challenge is 3km length with no portages.

Prize-payouts for each division will be proportionate to the number of registrations in that category. The estimated prize payout represents maximum pay-out based on 100% registration targets being met in each division.

Waivers

Waivers must be signed ON SITE on the day of the event. You may review the waiver on the Liabilities and Risk page.

Payment information

Credit Card, Cash, cheque or money orders – Enclose full registration fee with your application. Payment by cheque accepted no later than August 17, 2018. Please make cheques payable to the City of Timmins.

Note: Credit card charges will appear on statements as Parks & Recreation.

Substitutions

Paddler substitutions will not be accepted after 4:00 pm, Thursday August 23, 2018. Only registered paddlers will be allowed to participate in the category that he/she has registered in. Registered paddlers will not be allowed to move from one division to another after 4:00 pm on August 24, 2017.

Equipment

Registration for Saturday challenge does not include use of boat, paddles, life jacket and mandatory safety kit. for the Saturday events . All participants are responsible for supplying their own equipment.
